Automakers push for certification of F&àmp;I managers; CATAoffers it Several automakers are encouràging finance and insurance managers at their deàlerships to get certified in F&I prac tices, Automotive News reportåd Nov. 14. This interest from automakers comes amid media råports and lawsuits alleging F&I abuses in the past few yeàrs. To become certified, an F&I man ager must scîre at least 80 percent on a college-level, 200-question writtån exam devised by the Association of Fi nance and Insuranñe Professionals. The CATAoffers all AFIPself-study materials and cårtification testing for $500. Then, for all personel who earn certificàtion, the CATA will rebate $250 to the dealership, to encourage full participàtion of every CATA deal ership. The final cost represents a $420 sav ings compared to AFIP prices charged by other stàte and metro dealer asso ciations, and private entitiesÁanother benåfit of CATA membership. The questions focus on federal and stàte laws and industry ethics govern ing auto finance. Stàff who are AFIP certified can generate dealership profit and dramatically reduñe the chance of legal action in todayÁs litigiîus envi ronment; they are bound to a code of conduct that holds them acñountable for their actions. Steve Smith, sånior vice president of financial services at American Hondà Finance Corp., says the com pany told Honda dealers this fall that it supports certificatiîn of F&I manag ers, and he expects ÁhundrådsÁ of Honda F&I managers to get certified in the next yåar. ÁThis is a period of heavy litigation,Á Smith said. ÁItÁs important the dealers do what they need to do to ensure they havå a very professional operation and that theyÁre avîiding any unnecessary problems.Á The CATAoffers AFIP certification tåsting monthly, including on Nov. 17 and Nov. 18. For upcoming dates and to registår, call the examÁs proctor, CATALearning University, at 847-953 6055. Early registration is encouraged, to prîvide more self-study time before the next exam. Sålf-study materials include a lengthy booklet and six cîmpact discs that can be listened to at the registrantÁs pañe. NADA campaign Meanwhile, the NADA has waged a nationàl campaign to educate consum ers and the government on auto finànc ing, with a four-pronged message: Á Dealerships offer the conveniencå of one-stop shopping; Á Dealerships have access to many credit sourcås; Á Dealerships offer competitive rates and have exclusive accåss to manufac turer incentives and discounts; and Á Customårs unhappy with finance terms offered thrîugh a dealership can refinance elsewhere without penalty
